The entrepreneurship competition for the most innovative companies in the Nordics

Serendipity Challenge is an annual entrepreneurship competition and tech venue open to all Swedish and Nordic startups and growth companies. The competition final takes place during Almedalsveckan (2-4 July) where 50 of the most innovative and promising companies compete for the titles “Startup Company of the Year” and ”Growth Company of the Year”. All 50 companies also stands the chance of winning the ”Price of the Audience” as well as the ”Industry Award”.

The Serendipity Challenge competition has the purpose of acknowledging entrepreneurship and give entrepreneurs the opportunity to showcase their company’s products and services on a public arena. The competition also aims to highlight Sweden and the Nordic region as hotbeds for innovative, emerging enterprises that change, improve, and develop their industries on a global level as well as function as a connecting platform for entrepreneurs, business leaders, investors, media, politicians, and partners.

Serendipity Challenge winners get access to expertise worth SEK 200,000 – for the company’s next development phase. Expertise will be tailored according to business needs.

Winner Delegation Trip

Winners gets a spot on the winners delegation trip with the purpose of gathering inspiration and network that will excel your business event further. You will meet investors, potential business partners and visit some of the largest and most prominent tech companies in the world.


The competition is open to all entrepreneur-led companies regardless of their area of business/business sector. The company must:

  • Be entrepreneur-driven
  • Be based on a unique technology/concept/business idea


The jury assesses the companies and their business idea based on:

  • Scalability
  • Uniqueness
  • Market potential
  • Global applicability
  • Team skills/competency

50 emerging enterprises get exhibit spacein Almedalen’s Silicon Valley during the finals

All 50 companies competing in the finals can exhibit their business at the tech venue in the heart of Visby, which for two days will become the Silicon Valley of Almedalen. In total the Almedalen event attracts approximately 40.000 visitors, including industry executives, politicians, entrepreneurs and journalists. In the tech venue, the visitors will be able to experience tomorrow’s technologies, products, and services as well as meet the entrepreneurs who build these new companies with the goal to change, improve, and develop their industries.

Seminar program“From startup to unicorn”

A full-day program focused on innovation, entrepreneurship, and global expansion. Listen to entrepreneurs, Swedish industry executives, and politicians in panel discussions addressing key issues on how Sweden can further strengthen its position as a leading nation in innovation and export. During the afternoon, the Serendipity Challenge 2018 winners are announced.

Entrepreneurs’ village

During Almedalsveckan, nearly 100 entrepreneurs move into the entrepreneurs’ village. On a few occasions, the village will be open for guests and serves as a venue for entrepreneurs, business partners, industry executives, and politicians.

Application for Serendipity Challenge 2018 is now closed, the participating companies will be announced in June.

Rules & Terms

By participating, you and the company (i) agree to Serendipity Challenge terms and conditions for participation and (ii) confirm that the information you submit is truthful. You must ensure that you or the company owns and produced all submitted photographs, text, and other material. All entries must be received no later than Tuesday, 8 May 2018.

Competition managers (and external experts, if necessary) review your application. All materials that you submit in connection with the competition will be treated as public information. If there are specific reasons why certain information must remain confidential during the initial selection process, then you are responsible for notifying the competition managers in the submission form field that asks for additional information.

Qualifying presentations occur only before the jury. On-site spectators will be following the finals. Competition management reserves the right (if deemed appropriate) to indefinitely use parts of the presentation for communication and marketing purposes.

  • Competition management reserves the right to terminate or modify Serendipity Challenge without prior notification.
  • The jury’s decision in all Serendipity Challenge phases is final and cannot be appealed.
  • Competition management cannot be held liable for any losses or damages suffered by competing companies, as a consequence of participation in Serendipity Challenge.

Usage rights

By participating in Serendipity Challenge 2018, you agree that competition management may:

  • Publish and display your contribution for communication and marketing purposes before, during, and after the competition, where and when appropriate.
  • Use images, text, and materials that you send and generated during the competition for communication and marketing purposes, for an unlimited period without remuneration.
